What actually happened
No government body ever confirmed any approval — New York City Hall said the claim was 'news to City Hall' the same day. The Boring Company dug nothing on the corridor beyond a Maryland permit, and by February 2021 it had scrubbed the DC-to-Baltimore tunnel project from its website entirely. The 'verbal govt approval' tweet of July 20, 2017 claimed The Boring Company could build an underground hyperloop linking New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington with a 29-minute NY-DC trip. City officials along the entire corridor immediately said no such approval existed. The Boring Company obtained only a conditional Maryland utility permit, dug nothing, and removed the project from its website by early 2021.
