What actually happened

Shipping slipped and the headline product died. Only ~500 pilot units trickled out of Fremont in 2015, with real customer installations starting in early 2016 — months past the 'three or four months' promise. Worse, the $3,500 10 kWh backup Powerwall Musk priced on stage was quietly discontinued by March 2016, less than a year after the reveal, leaving only the smaller 7 kWh daily-cycling version. At the April 2015 Tesla Energy launch, Musk introduced the Powerwall at $3,500 and told buyers it would start shipping 'in approximately three or four months.' Pilot units arrived late, volume deliveries slid to 2016, and the specific $3,500 10 kWh model on the order page was scrapped within a year. The Powerwall line itself went on to become a genuine business — the launch promises just didn't survive contact with production.
