What actually happened
The Model X arrived almost two years late. Instead of late-2013 first units and 2014 bulk production, Tesla delivered the first six Founders Series Model X SUVs on September 29, 2015, and volume production was not reached until 2016 — Musk himself blamed the falcon-wing doors and said he would have designed a simpler car if he could start over. At the Model X unveil in February 2012, Musk told the crowd production would start toward the end of 2013 with bulk production in 2014. The falcon-wing-door SUV slipped repeatedly and first customer cars were handed over September 29, 2015 — the original timeline miss that foreshadowed every later Tesla vehicle delay from Model 3 to Cybertruck to Roadster.
