What actually happened
On the January 28, 2026 earnings call Musk admitted Tesla had no Optimus robots doing useful work: production V1/V2 units never reached genuine factory utility, and Optimus V3 — the version he now says will actually work — was still months from production. The 'high production for other companies in 2026' half of the claim has also been abandoned, with external sales pushed out indefinitely. By the January 2026 earnings call Musk conceded no Optimus was doing useful work at Tesla, blaming hand/forearm limitations, and pinned hopes on the V3 redesign instead.
