Home versus Supercharger
The single biggest lever on running cost is where you charge. Home
charging on an off-peak tariff is usually the cheapest electricity available to you; Supercharging
buys speed and convenience at a premium, and is priced per kWh at rates that vary by site and hour.
Most owners do the overwhelming majority of charging at home and use Superchargers for travel.
Rates change constantly and vary by region, tariff and
time of day, so this calculator uses your own inputs rather than baked-in prices that would go stale.
The US residential average sits near 17¢/kWh; check your bill for your real figure.
Questions
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla at home?
Multiply your pack size by your electricity rate. A 75 kWh pack on the US average of about 17¢/kWh is roughly $12.75 for a full charge from empty, which at 250 miles of range works out near 5¢ per mile. Charging losses add a few percent on top.
Is Supercharging more expensive than home charging?
Almost always, typically two to three times the home rate. Supercharger pricing varies by location and time of day, and some sites add idle fees. Home charging on an off-peak tariff is the cheapest electricity most owners can buy.
How does this compare to petrol?
A car doing 30 mpg with petrol at $3.50/gal costs about 11.7¢ per mile. Home charging at 5¢ per mile is roughly a third of that. The calculator shows your own numbers rather than an average.
Why does my real cost come out higher?
Charging is not 100% efficient — some energy is lost as heat in the charger and the pack, and the car draws power for thermal management. Expect roughly 10% more energy drawn from the wall than lands in the battery, which the calculator accounts for.
Does cold weather change the cost?
Yes. Cold reduces efficiency and the car spends energy heating the pack and cabin, so winter cost per mile is meaningfully higher. The pack itself is fine — that is temporary, not degradation. To check for real capacity loss, use the battery health test.
