Musk first put a date on Optimus in August 2021: a prototype "next year." That one landed. A walking prototype came out at AI Day on September 30, 2022. Every date since has been about volume and customers, and those dates keep moving.
In April 2022 he gave Optimus "a shot" at production in 2023. In June 2024 it was "over 1,000, maybe a few thousand" robots working at Tesla in 2025. In January 2025 he said Tesla would make "several thousand" that year. Reporting puts 2025 output at a few hundred, and in January 2026 Musk said no Optimus was doing useful factory work.
The date for outside customers moved too. In mid-2024 he said Tesla would be "providing Optimus robots to outside customers" in 2026. On the October 21, 2026 earnings call he put deliveries to companies outside Tesla around the end of 2027. In January 2026 he said Tesla would sell humanoid robots to the public by the end of 2027.
The volume goal is a million a year. In October 2024 he said that would take five or six years. In October 2025 he promised a million-unit line starting toward the end of 2026. In October 2026 he said most of that line is in Fremont and that reaching 20,000 a week will take "at least a year." The price target has held: under $20,000 in 2022, $20,000 to $30,000 in 2024. Tesla's Q3 2026 letter says production of production-quality bots has started in Fremont. There is no public price or order page.
