Starship reaches orbit

“This is going to sound totally nuts, but I think we want to try to reach orbit in less than six months.”

What actually happened

Musk wanted Starship to 'reach orbit in less than six months' (targets ranged 2020–2022). Starship reached orbital VELOCITY for the first time on Flight 3 (March 14, 2024) — a major milestone — but as of mid-2026 it has still never completed an orbit: every integrated flight through Flight 12 (May 22, 2026) flew a deliberately suborbital trajectory and splashed down. Graded partial: orbital velocity achieved (years late), but a sustained orbit — the literal promise — has not happened. Status: Partial · 1.2 years late. Sort of happened.

Starship orbital by March 2020 was unveiled in September 2019 with Musk estimating Starship could reach orbit by March 2020. Millions of space enthusiasts and stakeholders involved in SpaceX's Mars ambitions are waiting. This follows SpaceX's pattern of similar predictions. However, the timeline has shifted, with the first orbital flight test now expected in 2021.
