What actually happened

Musk wanted Starship to 'reach orbit in less than six months' (targets ranged 2020–2022). Starship reached orbital VELOCITY for the first time on Flight 3 (March 14, 2024) — a major milestone — but as of Aug 2026 it has still never completed an orbit: every integrated flight through Flight 13 (Jul 24, 2026) flew a deliberately suborbital/transatmospheric trajectory and splashed down. Flight 13 became the first Starship to deploy operational payloads (20 Starlink) but remained suborbital; Flight 14 (NET Aug/Q3 2026) is slated as Starship's first true orbital attempt.
