A few years became a decade-plus. Through 2018 Tesla shipped only supervised highway Autopilot; the first FSD city-streets beta reached a handful of testers in late 2020; and the first driverless customer rides didn't happen until Tesla's monitored Austin robotaxi launch in 2025, going monitor-free only in January 2026. On stage with NVIDIA's Jen-Hsun Huang at GTC 2015, Musk said autonomous driving was 'almost... a solved problem' and Tesla would 'be there in a few years.' Seven months before the first Autopilot release, this is among the earliest of his full-autonomy timelines — sitting between the 2014 '90% of miles' claim and the 2016 coast-to-coast promise in the long arc of missed FSD predictions.
