At Tesla's Autonomy Day on April 22, 2019, Musk said every Tesla then in production had the hardware necessary for full self-driving — the HW3 computer. The assurance underpinned FSD purchases on millions of vehicles. Musk conceded in January 2025 that FSD buyers' HW3 computers would need upgrades, and in April 2026 confirmed those cars also need new cameras, with HW3 never getting unsupervised FSD.
