What actually happened
Musk pledged (Nov 26, 2025) the Austin robotaxi fleet would 'roughly double next month' — after quietly trimming the broader goal from 500 vehicles to about 60. It never doubled on that deadline. Crowdsourced trackers built from Tesla's own app counted ~29 unique robotaxis at the pledge and only 32 by late December 2025 — three more, not a doubling. As of August 25 2026 the picture is mixed but still not a clean later doubling of the original unique-count metric: Texas AV filings list ~188 registered Tesla AVs (Aug 23), Robotaxi Tracker logged 54 unique unsupervised Austin cars over two weeks (The Verge, Aug 20), and Electrek's Aug 24 tracking still puts the active unsupervised fleet at roughly two dozen.
