What actually happened
Musk pledged (Nov 26, 2025) the Austin robotaxi fleet would 'roughly double next month' — after quietly trimming the broader goal from 500 vehicles to about 60. It never doubled. Crowdsourced trackers built from Tesla's own app counted ~29 unique robotaxis at the pledge and only 32 by late December 2025 — three more, not a doubling. It never doubled later either: ~42 by February 2026, then shrinking to ~20 active in the Austin metro by June 2026. The program has not been renounced, so the overdue clock is still ticking.
