In October 2014 Musk said that in five or six years you could get in a Tesla, go to sleep and wake up at your destination. He has given a new date for driverless Teslas almost every year since: "a solved problem" in 2015, "less than two years away" in 2016, the end of 2019 (said in 2018), the end of 2020 (said in 2019 and 2020), 2021, 2022, the end of 2023, and then 2025 for unsupervised FSD in Texas and California.
None of those dates held. Customer cars still run "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)," which needs an attentive driver. In 2019 he said every Tesla then being built had all the hardware it needed. In January 2025 he said HW3 cars would need new hardware.
Some smaller promises arrived, mostly late. FSD Beta reached every North American buyer in November 2022, two years after the first target. The subscription came in July 2021, not early 2021. A Model Y drove itself from Giga Texas to a customer on June 28, 2025, on the date he gave. Europe approved FSD Supervised on April 10, 2026, four years after the "this summer" he gave in 2022.
Open now: "millions of Teslas operating fully autonomously" in the second half of 2026, and FSD v15 by the end of 2026. Tesla's Q3 2026 update moved unsupervised FSD for owners' cars to Q2 2027, inside Robotaxi areas only.
