Master Plan Part Deux, in July 2016, said a Tesla heavy truck would be ready to unveil the next year. Musk then named the end of September 2017. The Semi was unveiled on November 16, 2017, with production promised for 2019 and a 500-mile range at full weight.

Production came three years late. In August 2022 Musk said the Semi would start shipping that year, and the first trucks went to PepsiCo on December 1, 2022, after a 500-mile run at 81,000 lb. The October 2022 target of 50,000 Semis in 2024 was missed; only low volumes were built that year. The high-volume Semi line in Nevada built its first truck on April 29, 2026.
