What actually happened
Musk promised (Dec 2025) to open-source 'literally all of the @X codebase. Nothing left out at all' by roughly the end of January 2026. X open-sourced its recommendation algorithm (xai-org/x-algorithm) on January 20, 2026, before the deadline, with a March 19 update following. On July 24 2026 he restated the full-codebase pledge: 'next month, every line of code touching the X system will be open source and third-party audited' (targeting August 2026). On August 13 2026 X expanded that algorithm repo — 10–15× larger, with the For-You ranker, model config, and filters, plus a shadowban-visibility feature — but this is still only the ranking stack, not the entire X codebase.
