Rural internet: satellite, 5G and Starlink compared

About 28% of rural Americans have no 100 Mbps wired service, per the FCC. Here is what you can get instead, priced from each provider's own site.

What's your situation?

Starlink, unless the budget is very tight.

Starlink's latency is 25–60 ms. Geostationary satellite (Viasat, HughesNet) measured 594–624 ms in the FCC's tests, which makes video calls and gaming hard. Viasat and HughesNet start at $39.99 for the first 12 months, then rise.

Why latency decides it

milliseconds, lower is better
Wired (cable, fiber, DSL)up to 43 msStarlink (its own figure)up to 60 msVerizon 5G Homeup to 70 msGeostationary satelliteup to 624 ms

A geostationary signal travels about 44,500 miles up and back, so the FCC measured 594–624 ms median latency on it vs 11–43 ms on wired service (FCC Measuring Broadband America; 2016 data). Starlink's satellites orbit far lower; Starlink states 25–60 ms on land (Starlink specifications).

The rural gap

"Fixed terrestrial broadband service (excluding satellite) has not been physically deployed to approximately 24 million Americans, including almost 28% of Americans in rural areas." FCC, 14 Mar 2024 (FCC report; data as of December 2022).

Questions

What is the best internet for rural areas?

If you get a solid 5G signal, 5G home internet (T-Mobile from $50, Verizon from $60, less with their phone plans) is usually the cheapest. If only satellite reaches you, Starlink's 25–60 ms latency beats geostationary satellite by a wide margin. Prices checked 12 Oct 2026.

How many rural Americans lack broadband?

The FCC's March 2024 report found fixed wired or wireless broadband at 100/20 Mbps hadn't reached about 24 million Americans, including almost 28% of rural Americans (data as of December 2022, satellite excluded).

Starlink vs HughesNet and Viasat: what's the difference?

Starlink uses low-orbit satellites; HughesNet and Viasat use geostationary ones about 22,000 miles up. The FCC measured 594–624 ms median latency on geostationary service; Starlink states 25–60 ms. Viasat and HughesNet start cheaper ($39.99 for 12 months) but rise after the promo.

Starlink vs T-Mobile or Verizon home internet?

Where 5G home coverage is strong, it costs less and needs no dish. Starlink works where cell coverage doesn't, with a clear view of the sky. Check both at your address.

Is Amazon's satellite internet available?

Amazon Leo (formerly Project Kuiper) is not on sale to consumers yet: Amazon ran an enterprise preview from November 2025 and says it will roll out more widely in 2026.

Can I try Starlink risk-free?

Starlink offers a 30-day hardware trial with a refund if you return the kit, minus shipping. See the Starlink return policy for the exact clock.
