Did Starlink hit the 300 Mbps Musk promised?

No. On Feb 22, 2021 he said speed would double to about 300 Mb/s and latency would drop to about 20 ms "later this year". Ookla's medians since then:

All medians. Fiber alone runs faster than the wired average: in 1H 2026, 48.1% of US fiber Speedtest samples came from providers with a 300 to 400 Mbps median (Ookla fiber 2026). Starlink's own figure: "the median download speed across more than 2 million active Starlink customers during times of peak demand is nearly 200 Mbps as of July 2025." In the US, fewer than one percent of measurements exceed 55 ms.

Why is my Starlink slower than that?

Medians hide a spread. In 2H 2025 Ookla's fastest state was Nebraska at 200.8 Mbps. Speeds drop at peak hours, behind trees, and on Roam once the high-speed data runs out. Roam plans list "up to 300+ Mbps", and Starlink says speeds "are not guaranteed".

Questions

How fast is Starlink internet in 2026?

Ookla measured a US median of 127.39 Mbps down, 21.46 Mbps up and 39 ms latency in Q1 2026 (published 5 May 2026). Starlink's own figure is nearly 200 Mbps at peak hour (July 2025).

Is Starlink faster than 5G home internet?

Slower than T-Mobile and AT&T, level with Verizon. In Q2 2026 Ookla measured T-Mobile 5G Home at 222.72 Mbps, AT&T Internet Air at 160.43 and Verizon 5G Home at 126.53, against Starlink's 127.39 in Q1 2026. Starlink reaches places with no 5G signal.

What is Starlink's latency?

39 ms median in Q1 2026 by Ookla's count; Starlink reports 25.7 ms at peak hour (June 2025). Its stated goal is 20 ms. Geostationary satellite measured 674 ms (Hughesnet) and 750 ms (Viasat).

Is Starlink good for gaming?

For most online games, yes: 39 ms median, against 12 ms on US wired broadband. Geostationary satellite at 674+ ms is not. Trees or roofs in the dish's view cause short dropouts, which hurt games more than a slow average.

Does Starlink meet the FCC broadband standard?

For 44.7% of Starlink Speedtest users in Q4 2025, up from 17.4% in Q1 2025 (Ookla). The FCC standard is 100 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up.

How do I test my Starlink speed?

Run the speed test in the Starlink app, then one from a device on a cable to the router. Test at peak hours (evenings) and off-peak, and check the app for obstructions in the dish's view.
