At the Oct 28 2016 unveil Musk claimed a solar roof would cost less than a normal roof. In reality, as of 2025–2026 a Tesla Solar Roof costs roughly $50–$63 per square foot (over $100k for an average home) — far more than a conventional roof, and far more than a normal roof plus standard solar panels.
